How to leave a lasting legacy
If your client is interested in giving back to their community by donation or bequest, Advance Ashburton can help.
Donations are invested so they can grow and become long-term reliable funding streams. It’s the income earned that is distributed to worthy local causes; the gift itself remains protected so it can continue to benefit the chosen causes into the future.

Why have the ‘philanthropy’ conversation?
Many Kiwis want to give, or at least have the desire to make a difference. Conversations about how clients can have an impact and do good with their money are often warm and very rewarding ones. Philanthropy conversations are an opportunity for you to connect with your clients’ core aspirations and values and to really build a long-term relationship with them.

Advisors, how we can work with you
Help your clients realise their goals
When you partner with us, you can take advantage of our philanthropic expertise, community connectedness and strategic approach to grant making – enabling your client to realise their goals for giving. New Zealanders are some of the most generous people in the world.
Flexible, tax-effective planning
Your client may wish to develop a tailored giving plan which is flexible, tax-effective and meets their giving goals. We make giving through us easy by preparing all the relevant paperwork and agreements. We will provide tax statements, and ongoing regular updates and performance statements.
Benefits of partnering with us
We work in partnership with you, either in the background, supporting you to have the conversation with your clients about developing a philanthropic plan; or we can offer advice directly. However you prefer, we will always respect and work within the relationships you have established.
As your philanthropy services partner, we can:
Here’s how
Set up a fund
Some people choose to establish their own fund, naming it after themselves, their family or honouring someone dear to them. Your client can name the charities or causes they would like to support, so whether it’s education, conservation, youth etc – we will ensure that their aspirations for giving are met, now and in the future.

Planned giving
Your client may wish to name us in their will, either specifying a dollar amount, a percentage of an estate or what remains after other bequests, including those to family members, are made. We will make sure that their donation goes to benefiting the causes they care about most.

Advisor Experience with Advance Ashburton

Gary Fail, Retired Solicitor
When I was a practising solicitor, I prepared wills for clients and advised them regarding gifts. Many wealthy and not so wealthy residents of the Ashburton area who had benefited from living and working locally wished to give or leave money to local charitable causes. Uncertain that gifts or bequests to national charities would particularly benefit the Ashburton District, they found Advance Ashburton Community Foundation a perfect alternative.
Others found the prospect of setting up their own permanent charitable trust a rather daunting prospect, and the solution again was provided by Advance Ashburton. Using Advance Ashburton as a locally focused trustee, donors could establish their own personal funds (named if they wish) for the particular local purposes they wished to benefit.
This was, and still is, a wonderful local facility: I see its role growing exponentially in the future.

Trevor Croy, Retired Accountant
In 2003 retired Chartered Accountant Neil Sinclair had a vision. He had learned about Community Foundations and believed that the community of Ashburton District was both generous and would benefit from the establishment of a home-grown charitable organisation.
That was nearly 20 years ago, and from his energy and determination the Foundation was formed. His vision proved to be correct, and the Foundation has grown to be a significant player in the not-for-profit sector.
As a chartered accountant firstly with local firm Brophy Knight Ltd and then as owner and principal for 17 years of Croys Ltd, I worked with many clients who wanted to make a difference to the community. For many the district had been good to them, and they wanted to give something back. I recommended Advance Ashburton to my clients because of its philanthropic expertise, community connectedness, low-cost infrastructure, and strategic approach to grant making. The Foundation helped a number of my clients realise their goals for giving.
After I retired from my business, I become involved in Advance Ashburton as a trustee, then chair and now as patron because I could see the opportunities to help make Ashburton District a better place.
To me Community Foundations are all about connecting generous people and organisations that care with community causes that matter. This philosophy has led this Foundation to be involved a numerous projects that are catalytic and transformational. Examples are the BOOST child literacy programme, Lives Worth Living project, the Rural Health Academic Centre at Ashburton Hospital, and the Kohanga at Ashburton College. These projects are making a profound and positive difference in our community.
I continue to support absolutely the work of the Foundation, and if you have a cause in the community that you are passionate about, come and work with the Foundation to bring about positive change.
