Advance Ashburton Scholarships
Some of our donors have chosen to make provision for scholarships through the Foundation.
Note that some scholarships may not be offered every year
Scholarships currently available for tertiary studies are:
Advance Ashburton Community Foundation Scholarship (for any tertiary study)
This scholarship, for eligible persons undertaking tertiary education study, is funded by our generous donors who contribute to the General Fund.
Ashburton UFS Health Science Scholarship (for tertiary study in health science disciplines)
In 2008 trustees of the Ashburton United Friendly Society Dispensary established a special named fund with Advance Ashburton Community Foundation to provide scholarships for students who have been accepted into or are already studying in an approved health-related course in a tertiary institution.
Alister Smyth Scholarship (for any tertiary study)
Alister Smyth established a special named fund with Advance Ashburton Community Foundation in 2011 to provide scholarships for tertiary education study, with a preference for those who are financially or otherwise disadvantaged in terms of undertaking their study.
Johnston Brothers Health Science Scholarship (for education in any area connected with health)
In 2012 Alan and Bob Johnston established a special named fund with Advance Ashburton Community Foundation to provide scholarships for students who are undertaking further education in any area connected with health.
Tinwald Club Scholarship (for residents of the Tinwald area)
The Tinwald Club Fund will fund scholarships for those who live, or their parent(s) live, in the Tinwald area. (Note: For these purposes, the Tinwald area is defined as an arc with a 4 km radius with its center at the midpoint of the Ashburton River Road concrete structure bridge. The arc will be bounded in the North West by the southern bank of the South branch of the Ashburton River and swing south through South east to the south bank of the Ashburton River.)
Parsons Family Scholarship (for study in agriculture, horticulture, or aquaculture)
The Parsons Family established a special named fund with Advance Ashburton Community Foundation in 2014 to provide scholarships in the fields of agricultural, horticulture or aquaculture.
Ian Glassey Memorial Scholarship (for environmental studies)
The Ian Glassey Memorial Fund was established in 2015 and funds a scholarship for those who will contribute to the enhancement of the environment through undertaking environmental study.
Glass Family Scholarship (for newcomers to undertake tertiary study, particularly in agriculture)
Evan and Heather Glass established a special named fund in 2017 to provide needs-based scholarships for newcomers to the Ashburton District who are unlikely to receive financial assistance to enable them to complete study in agriculture.
Cameron Family Scholarship (for study in agriculture, horticulture, or medicine)
Brian and Norma Cameron established a special named fund in 2018 to fund a scholarship for those who are studying in the fields of agriculture, horticulture, or medicine.
Ashburton Hearing Association Scholarship (for study associated with hearing impairment)
The Ashburton Hearing Association established a fund with Advance Ashburton in 2019 to support scholarships to study audiology, scholarships for hearing-impaired persons who are studying, and assisting with the training and development of teachers to learn and use sign language.
Graham Gunn Music Scholarship
Graham Gunn established a special named fund in 2020 to fund a scholarship for those who are studying in the field of music. This scholarship could be awarded for tertiary study but also for a younger person to pursue music.
Colin & Alison Crampton Music & Arts Scholarship
Just prior to his death in 2022, Colin Crampton established a special named fund with Advance Ashburton in memory of his wife, Alison, who was a prominent musician in the Ashburton District. This scholarship is for those who would like to advance their knowledge and experience in music and the arts whether by way of education, purchase of instruments or materials, and travel or otherwise. This scholarship could be awarded for tertiary study but also for a younger person to pursue arts or music.
Dennis & Barbara Taylor Nursing Scholarship
Dennis & Barbara Taylor set up this scholarship in 2022 to support nursing students from the Ashburton District in their second year of study or above.
Frank Crampton Agricultural Scholarship
Jenny Crampton set up this scholarship in 2022 in memory of Frank to support students studying agriculture.
EA Networks Scholarship
For students in their second or subsequent years of study in electrical engineering, information technology, systems management, human resources, accounting, communications, or safety management.
Longfield Scholarship
For any type of tertiary study, for students in their second or subsequent years of study.
Kate Syme Scholarship (for any tertiary study)
Kate Syme established a special named fund with Advance Ashburton in 2022 for a current or former student of Ashburton College to pursue tertiary study, with a considered focus to support Māori and Pasifika students.
van der Kley Scholarship
For any type of tertiary study with a considered focus to support Pasifika youth.
Open dates for 2027 applications: OPENS 01 October 2026 CLOSES 31st OCTOBER 2026.
